Pregnancy can be exciting, scary, thrilling and difficult all at the same time. Many women feel anxious or depressed; in fact it is one of the most common complications of pregnancy. Symptoms can begin during pregnancy or after delivery. Up to 80% of women experience some Baby Blues after birth, but if the symptoms last longer than two weeks or make it difficult to provide care for the baby, it might be depression. Talking with a medical or mental health provider can help.

What to Do If You or Someone You Know is Depressed

The good news is that there are many things that can help! Talk with your medical provider about how you feel. Talk with a counselor or therapist. Things like talking with a trusted partner or friend, getting more sleep, eating a healthy diet, physical activity and deep breathing can also be helpful. Remember that you are not alone.

Support for Latina Moms

The State health department recently expanded a pregnancy-related depression and anxiety campaign to reach Latina moms. Pregnant and new moms can get the support they need through resources available here.

Tri-County Health Department, in partnership with Community Reach Center, is offering no cost support groups in Spanish language in Adams County. MamaHabla (PDF) is a great way for pregnant and post-delivery moms to connect with other moms. Each group has snacks, arts and crafts, and is all about the joys and challenges of motherhood. We will even give you a gift card for attending!
