One of Tri-County Health Department's many roles is to monitor the health of our communities through surveillance of a variety of sources of public health data. We examine birth certificate data to understand trends in access to prenatal care, pre-term births and low birth-weight births. We use death certificate data to monitor trends in deaths from a variety of causes such as heart disease, cancer, injury, stroke and suicide. The Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) provides information on the prevalence of health behaviors and preventive health practices associated with the leading causes of disease, disability, and premature death such as alcohol use, drug use, seatbelt non-use and non-use of recommended health screenings such as blood pressure, cholesterol and mammograms. The Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) helps us understand maternal attitudes and experiences prior to, during, and immediately following pregnancy. We use this information to help plan services at Tri-County Health Department, and also share it with other health care providers and policy makers to guide their service provision and decision making.
