Safe Handling of Household Hazardous Items

Many common products found in your home may be hazardous to you, your family, and the environment if used or disposed of improperly. Some of these chemicals include oil-based paint, mercury, gasoline, degreasers, cleaning compounds, and garden chemicals.

Disposing of chemicals properly reduces harm to sanitation workers, sewage treatment plants, and landfills. It also protects our environment by reducing pollution in our water and air.

It is important to read the product labels to safely store, use, and dispose of chemicals. When these chemicals are not used up entirely, they become household chemical waste. Find safe handling tips by visiting the EPA's Household Hazardous Waste webpage.
